Path of Exile can be a battle royale game for April Fools' Day

  • It's April Fools' Day, so don't trust what you read. Most developers can certainly make a throwaway announcement that is likely to make you double take, chuckle for some seconds, after which move on, but Grinding Gear Games POE Orbs went the whole hog and temporarily transformed its free-to-play action RPG Path of Exile in a 100-player battle royale game. Seriously.
"Based on community feedback, were announcing that any of us have abandoned the action RPG genre to pay attention to what players would like. Path of Exile will be replaced by Path of Exile: Royale, a 100-person free-for-all battle royale game," it said on its website. It claims so it only took 1 day of development to produce the switch.
Again, that is legit: my game is updating on Steam as I type this. It'll rename itself with your library and you'll be in a position to jump straight right into a round. Just like in other battle royale games, there's an ever-shrinking red zone to protect yourself from (the direction with the zone's centre is shown on the character's feet), even so the Path of Exile-twist is always that you'll have to fight computer-controlled monsters and also other players. Last one standing turns into a Rhoa Dinner.
Presumably, it'll switch back on Monday. But let's say the player count skyrockets (no indication of that yet, but it is still early)? Will Grinding Gear make it in being a separate game mode? Surely that needs to be in the back in the team's minds. For now,
it seems like a fun change of pace from your normal game, plus it might be worth diving POE Currency in for those who have a spare half hour.
